A buddy and I just returned from a camping trip to Oneida County for a few days of pike fishing. Unfortunately, due to strong storms forecasted to enter the area on Thursday afternoon, we had to cut our trip short, departing Thursday morning instead of the originally-planned Friday morning. Although our preference was to focus on northern bays and south-facing shorelines, we often tested areas with slightly lower water temperatures, such as deeper waters and north-facing or shaded bays. While action on the day with the coolest water temperatures (Wednesday) was better than the other days, our overall experience was similar to what others had experienced in the area: tough to find a bite, short bite windows, and waters that ranged upwards of 66°. Uggh! Once we set up camp on Monday, we were able to squeeze in a couple hours of fishing that evening, then we fished most of the day on Tuesday and Wednesday. Our catch total for the trip was 23 boated catches (3 walleye, 20 pike), several “drive-by” strikes, and a small handful of boat-side gotaways. Our largest pike were 22” (two) and 21.5” (one); most were quite juvenile. Two of the walleye were close to keeper size (15” minimum). Lure-wise, 2/5-oz Little Cleos in various color combinations led (16 catches), followed by Mepps #5 Aglias (6 catches), and a Chatterbait Freedom with paddletail trailer (1 catch). If you ever visit Upper Wisconsin and find yourself traveling through Tomahawk, WI, do yourself a favor and stop for lunch at the “Yummy Thai” food truck on N 4th Street, on the north side of NAPA Auto Parts. Their chicken panang curry with sticky rice is amazing.
