Recent Catches At Beaver River

Following a lead to an absolutely tantalizing looking spot promised by Gmaps, I made the 2 hour trip northwest to the Beaver. The staggering amount of log jams seen from space turned out to be in someone's property down stream, marked with a no trespassing sign after wading into the river some distance. A bit annoying as I may not have made the drive if the sign was visible from the street view lol Continuing upstream, the water was incredibly clear, cold and fast flowing. The low gradient meant there were long stretches of shallows, with a few indistinct deep spots testing your river reading skills. I managed to pull a few fish, but my brain was still too foggy and ended up fighting my gear often. While the fishing wasn't the greatest (not helped by sleep deprivation and another fisher there), the awesome scenery made up for it somewhat. Around noon, I made my way back to the car, ate a Clif bar and decided to head upstream to check out a small waterfall, since the other fisher I met recommended it for beautiful brookies. This stretch turned out to have an unreal fish density, all of which, while small, had full bellies and a dazzling shine on their golden spots. Tenkara was developed in Japan for mountain stream fishing, and I thought I'd never be able to experience it here in Ontario, but this location gave me a nice taste. This was as close to a mountain stream as I can imagine. To end the day, I decided to hit Tottenham pond as it was along the way back. The state of the pond had changed quite a bit since my last visit, as water plants grew tall all near the waters edge, and in combination with a stiff head wind, made fly fishing a challenge. My first view of the pond also revealed a concerning number of dead fish, however as I figured out my cast and picked out where the fish congregated, my worries subsided as I caught many giant sunfish, including a nice crappie. I may head back to the Beaver again as I've come across solid leads on some spring creeks. I'm excited for potentially catching some brookies in those pristine waters.

Went to the beaver river to try out my tenkara rod. Also brought my float rod and caught a nice little late season steelhead. I fished right under a little waterfall and caught many little Rainbows and Brookes. Very nice first outing with the tenkara rod.
