Barrow Gurney Reservoir 1

18th September 2021. Warm sunny day. Wind direction changed throughout the day with a light breeze initially easterly gradually changing to South Westerly. Started on No 3 tank but noted poor water clarity with heavy algae blooms massing in the corners. No surface signs that the fish were up in the water. Fished for 1 hour on the inlet pipe before moving over the road to see how the other tanks were in water quality. No 1 was the best tank for water clarity so moved around to Gully wall and tackled up with sinking line and hedgehog on short leader of 2 foot. Again very little surface feeding and with the air temperature up to about 20 degrees and bright sun the fish were obviously down in the water a bit or possibly hugging the ground. First fished of 2lbs was caught in the next hours which seemed to confirm our thoughts. Throughout the day the others rods were noted to be using long leaders and nymphs or lures were still not having any success. We did try a short visit to No 2 tank but again the water clarity was none too good and therefore returned to No 1 tank. By the end of the day I managed another 2 fish bringing the total to 3 which was not bad given my first trip out on fly fishing. Cloud cover came over from the South West about 15:00 hrs onwards and a few fish rose to confirm they were starting to move but we called it a day at 16:30hrs. My rod caught the most and possibly the only fish of the day. Points to note would be that you need to keep on the move and look out for the signs of where the fish could be and the "feel" of the day as to what the weather would impact on the conditions. I also need to improve my casting to at least 30 yards plus and start to practice and memorise my various knots.
