Recent Catches At Willowemoc Creek

Ryan Jones
Decided to repair my waders today and take a 2 hour drive to the upper willowemoc creek. I thought I would be targeting small brookies and browns but I was wrong. I landed this 18 inch brown with my 3 weight on a yellow stonefly. I started the day off by covered bridge campsite, and had a double nymph rig set up, but had no luck after 3 hours of fishing. Then it downpoured for 45 minutes, so I hiked back to my car and switched spots. I walked upstream to a deep hole under a tree, and saw many fish rising. These were the only fish I had seen all day. Threw a sulfer emerger tailed by a Griffiths gnat with no luck. Then tied on a light cahill, and caught the small brown. I missed another fish that was also smaller. The trout mostly stopped rising by this point, so I switched to the stone, as I had seen many husks on the rocks. I hooked into this guy on the 3 weight and after a few minutes and multiple missed net jobs, I landed him. I kept him in the water the entire time, only picking him up for a second to measure him against my net. He swam off strong. Might go somewhere local tomorrow, but I need to get back to the catskills soon.
